Hey everyone! I have a quick question, is there anywhere to wash your clothes? I've been worried about that because I don't want to have to pack like two suitcases full of clothes!

When you arrive, will the activities start the same day? is it a better idea to get to d.c. on the day before you sessions start?

Hey guys! I went to NYLC last month and I had a BLAST! Here's some tips from my experience.

1. BRING SNACKS! Like Cheeze its, granola bars, juice boxes etc. because hotel food isn't so good. There will be many days where you come back into your room and be STARVING. You will be thankful when you get to go out for lunch or dinner.

2. Girls, don't bring too many clothes. You have to share a closet with two other girls. My best advice would be to bring lots of items that you can mix and match with others. Laundry can be done through the hotel, but it's like ten dollars. Or at least at the Sheraton it was.

3. Get to know the people in your LGMs and Model Congress groups. Your LGM is basically your family away from home. It's amazing how close of a bond you form with these people. On the last day it's SOO hard to say goodbye. Model Congress is another family in a way, but you're not nearly with them as much as you are with LGM.

4. KEEP AN OPEN MIND. If something sounds stupid, and you keep thinking it will be, then it will be. You won't learn anything. But if you keep and open mind, you will be surprised with what you learn.

5. Don't be afraid to talk to other kids. They're all just as nervous on the first day as you are Smile So the first couple of days, go sit with a different table everyday.

6. Be prepared for people to ask you what NYLC is. You will have that nametag on everywhere you go and there's like 300 something kids, so people want to know.

7. Step out of your comfort zone.

8. Wear the NICEST thing you have the day you go on Capital Hill. You don't want to look like a mess.

9. Take LOTS and LOTS of pictures, you'll thank yourself later!

10. Last but not least, ENJOY EVERY MOMENT! The ten days go by so fast.

Hope my advice helps!

MIMI! <33 haha i totally agree with everything she said! one of the best things i liked about NYLC is that your labels dont come with you. like in highschool theres sterotypical labels nd everything but here they dont follow you so talk to people you wouldnt normally tlk to or tlk to people who maybe different from you, you would be AMAZED at how much you have in common! i did and i made some pretty amazing friends ((like mimi ^ (: ))

- also if theres a formal dance, dont wear a ball gown noone in my session did, i think one girl did and she looked out of place lol.

- dont forget to bring your own hangers the hotel rooms dont have to many

-you dont have to have an interest in politics if you go, i didnt and wen i came home my parents were amazed at how much i learned and that i gained A LOT of interest politics!

- DONT BE SHY! (: everyone feels the same way u do on the first few days

- tlk to people on the chat room designated for your session. ull feel alot better about going if you know a few people before you leave.

- if this is going to be your first time away from home HAVE fun. the first day i was rele sad to have left my parents but it gets SOOO much better, tlk to someone in ur LGM or a roomate about it - chances r they feel the same way you do!

- make sure u have a facebook & get everyones numbers and screen names, i still tlk to all my friends everyday from NYLC, next week they are actually having a reunion up in Maine for us (: bottom line is: the friendships you make here will last a life time!!!!

HAVE SOOOOO MUCH FUN GUYS && enjoy every minute of it!!!!
hope this helps (: !!!!!!!!

JuwahBel says girls should bring a big purse. What exactly do we have to carry in our bags? And does it matter if it doesn't look professional like a briefcase?

hey im going also cant wait to see u there. but back to wat ur concerns are: I am bring like 35 dollars a day or so, it depends on you and pick an amount u would logicall spend each day on food and souveniers (woops spelled it wrong). Also it says on the bring on arrival day sheet which baggage claim the shuttle will be at: at regan national airport= #6 in terminal B. dulles=#2. I am bring some pants like black suit pants but also some skirts that are summery and dresses that are considered summery so i think if u have a balance between businessy (but comfortable) and summery you're good. Hey I'm going to the july 3-12 conference too. see you guys there!
Oh, and I have a question. for the formal dance thing would it be ok if i wore a strapless floral sundress?

-Beauty is whatever anyone thinks is beautiful-
-One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art-
-Those who dance seem insane to those who can't hear the music-

Hey guys, now that you guys are attending NYLC be prepared for one of the best expeirences of your life. I went last year and it was by far the most amazing thing I had ever done. I made some great friends that i still keep in touch with. Now I'll tell you this, the first night is going to be awkward becasue no one knows each other but don't be afraid to speak up. Your at the National Young Leaders Conference so act like a leader and do a leadership position. The more you do, the better it will be. My suggestion is to try and be Speaker of the House, only one person gets it but don't be afraid to try and become that one person. There are plenty of chances to get a leadership position and try and get atleast one of them. Also, don't be afraid to talk to others. They are in the same position you are in. They don't really know anyone else. On the second day, I met the 3 guys that I would hang out with for the rest of the time because we all went to McDonalds and didnt want to be lonely. Another tip, make sure you put your money in a safe place. I kept my money in a pair of socks that weren't like any of my others. Make sure to take a bottle of advil or atleast a bag with a few of them that way in case you need them, you have them. I would also suggest taking some snacks to eat when your in your room because your going to get hungry and this way you have something to munch on. And one last thing, enjoy your time. It goes so quick and you become almost like family when your there and its sad when you have to leave. Take advantage of everything and enjoy everthing, some things may see boring but its a once in a lifetime chance so just have fun with other scholars.
