Oh dude, it's totally fabulous, it's like really chill coastal rap, and the lyrics are just incredible.

Hey all, guy #2 Wink

My names Rory, I'm from Wilmington, Delaware, and I'll just assume you know where that is :P Oh, yea, I'm a sophomore, and I'm going to March 17-22.

Seven things about me?

1) I write poetry, I've been writing since second grade. I used to do it for venting, but I finally got out of that phase and now I write to try and convey a message and improve my style.

2) I love to sail. I do it at camp every summer, and I started five years ago. There is something about being in control of the boat, yet at the mercy of the sea that draws me to it. I race though, so its not always mindless :P

3) I sing, I've been in my school chorus since 5th grade, and I'm in the high school chorus and vocal ensemble. I've been in all-state a few times. I'm a tenor, and I didn't even need to chop 'em off haha.

4) Last year I ran spring track, and this year I picked up cross-country and indoor. By process of elimination of every other sport, it turns out running was the only option left, and I'm glad it was. I can't stop now :P

5) I've been going to the same school since second grade, 50-55 people per grade. It has its benefits, and certain downfalls, but I can't say I'd want to go somewhere else at this point in my high school career.

6) Philosophy? Yes. Thought-crime is my hobby(Reference?) Don't get into conversations with me late at night, it becomes apparent that I could lose myself in ideas, and may never return.

7) Part of the reason I am intrigued by the NYLC is the topic of leadership. To me, the concepts of politics and power hold large importance in our world, on all levels. How humans interact is awe-inspiring when you think about it, and leadership is a key connection that works in a lot of different ways.

You had me when you said that you wrote poetry.lol Is that a poem you wrote yourself in your signature? It doesn't sound like something I've read before. Who's you're favorite poet?

Edna St. Vincent Millay is probably my favorite

Yea, its a stanza of one of my incomplete poems.

Langston Hughes, Poe, Leonie Adams, Frost...

I've enjoyed what I've read of Millay though.

I think the people in my session seem pretty cool. It'll be funny though if we go to the actual conference and we end up not even seeing each other.

I've never read any poetry from Leonie Adams, but anything from Frost,Poe and Hughes are always good reads. I love the Lockless Door from Frost

I haven't read The Lockless Door much, but how do you like Fire and Ice and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening?

I love them both! Fire and Ice more so. It was a little annoying to see it in Eclipse. Did you like Nothing Gold Can Stay? Have you ever read any of Wordsworth? Imitations of Immortality is really great. I love Romanticist poets.

The way some poetry has been used is horrible, like the Nike commercial with Harlem.

Nothing Gold Can Stay is a great poem Big Grin

I haven't read a lot of Wordsworth, but I just took a look at Imitations, and its an amazing piece of work.

Romanticist poets are great, they entertained a completely different perspective on things. The reason I enjoy reading modern is because recent poetry and poets have had the option of going "outside the box" in terms of their rhyming scheme and rhythm, while older poetry was often constructed within certain parameters, you know?

For me Lord Byron was one of the few who was totally out of the box when it came to the romanticists ( I'll blame it on his brooding and just plain misanthropic view of humanity when it came to certain ideas).

Sadly I've never read Don Juan. Keats is another favorite of mine. His "When I have fears that I May Cease to Be" is probably in my top ten of most epic poems of all time, lol.

As far as modern day poetry goes who's your absolute favorite?

I just read some of Leonie Adams, and I love "lullaby". I really enjoyed her style. It was clever.

BTW I totally agree on the whole Nike commercial thing.

I haven't read a lot of Byron, but yes, he did break barriers.

Keats was a great poet, and I just read that poem, I'm surprised its never come up for me before.

I'm not sure who my favorite modern day poet is, there are so many, and I wouldn't claim to know of dozens, so I'm sure I'm missing major players, you know?

I must say, as far as form goes, I love the Villanelle. If I Could Tell You by W.H. Auden, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas, and The Waking by Theodore Roethke are all incredible works. (I didn't name them off the top of my head btw :P. I pulled a book out that I marked them in)

Haha, you just introduced me to a new poetic form. Big Grin Thanks. What's your opinion on nonsense verse? Check out Lewis Caroll's Jabberwocky. (I'm a total Alice in Wonderland geek, sorry lol.

Haha, glad I could help Smile

I assume nonsense verse is referring to verse that makes up words?

If that's the case, I don't know if I've read any others besides Jabberwocky. I think if the technique is applied in the right context it can make a great piece of art. I love how it emphasizes the sounds of things, and the innate meaning of actions that we develop. You know, how he can say one thing that doesn't make any sense but that speaks to us just as well as the real word? Its as though we have a sense of the action that doesn't require a description.

I complain about miami a lot, and most of the teenagers down here will tell you that there is absolutely nothing to do if you don't have a car. Because really there isn't. You're either surrounded by Everglades, strip malls, or farmland.

The best place down here is the downtown area but it's a long drive and not to mention gas money. The only thing I can really say about Miami that's truly positive is it's (mostly) open-mindedness and the sky.

If I was a much more talented writer I could write so many ballads to describe how mind boggling the sky looks at certain times. Especially on warm humid nights. There's nothing like it.
