Just a word of advice that i soon learned there.... if you are planning on buying snacks in the vendind machines during break or before your lfg meetings i would bring 1's because thats all they take and there isnt really a place to get smaller bills. Also at some places if you are just buying something really small they dont appriciate it if you use a 20 or a 50.....

Okay, I have been trying to help since the helping alumni is dwindling down. So I tried to go through the boards and be as helpful as possible. I tried making a list of things to remember when you go on the trip. . .
1.Try to bring a digital camera so you can take TONS of pictures.
2.Get your friends addresses, phone numbers, emails, and screen names!!
3.Have Fun!!!!
4.Don't stay up too late.(I know this from experience!)
5.Meet as many people as possible!
6.wear comfterble clothing.(and shoes!!)
7.Enjoy the week it will be over before you know it1
8.Try to make the best out of everything you get to do even if youre not sure you want to do it!
9.If you want to remember anything I would suggest writing down funni things you want to remember.
11.Make friends with your groupmember and roomies!
12.Keep in touch with all your friends.(me and my four best friends have for a little over a year!)
13.Be open to everyones opions and ideas!
14.Pay attention the information you get may come in handy later in life or during the trip.
15.Make a shower sceduale if a roomie is always hogging it!(Most people are pretty good about the shower thing!)
16.Bring appropriate clothing:they will make you change if its not though there pretty flexible!
17.Remember your money1
18.Relax and have fun1
19.Remember that this is a once and a lifetime opportunity!
20.Check to make sure you have everything you need for the day before you leave yor room in the morning!
21.Put your room card somewhere safe, it tends to fall out of the back of your name tag.
22.Wear your name tag always!
23.Bring a cell phone.
24.Make sure to be yourself.
25.If you have a problem tell a FA or SR!
26.Dont be shy.
27.Make sure to bring any medication you might need.
28.The best gift shop time is after dinner.
29.Make more than one friend.
30.Listen and participate.
31.Bring snacks!
32.Get up early there is a long breakfast line.
33.dont spend all of your money in one place!
34.Never forget your name tag, room key, or scheduale.
35.Pay attention to the FAs and SRs.
36.Dont have a slushie for breakfast its not good!
37.Dont get close to someone and not get there number- you regret it forever!

Just to add... if you feel homesick, calling SR won't help. Calling a family member or just talk to a friend, or count down the days until you see your mom, dad, etc. Plus, the snacks at the 4-H Center Gift Shop are pretty cheap, so you don't have to bring a lot of snacks.

words of advice for future JrNYLC scholars. i went to the 4H so my advice will be for the 4H.

1. on the 1st day, get there as soon as you can. the check-in lines get really long
2. the rooms are really small. i had 3 roommates so it was 4 girls to each room.
3. set as many alarm clocks as you can. it will help you get up in the morning. my roommates and i set all of our cell phone alarms plus the one in the room
4. Don't stay up too late. YOU WILL REGRET IT!!
5. make a shower schedule with your roommates. it will help u all get ready for the day and at night
6. Don't be late for class! they give you more freedom for a reason! the FA's aren't mean but they won't tolerate it
7. Always wear a watch! it will help you stay on schedule. make sure you set it to conference time
8. if u can sleep on the bus, do it. i didn't and i was literly falling asleep on my feet
9. at the 4H, their is a really cool game/hangout room, make sure you enjoy it
10. Make friends!!
11. be prepared
12. you will always need a buddy to go somewhere without your LFG
13. Get all of your friends and roommates numbers, emails, addresses, anything you can talk to them with. If u don't, you will regret it
14. the night before you sleepover at the science center, they make u pack up your stuff. So i suggest you live out of ur suitcase. it will be easier to pack up ur stuff at the end of the conference.
15. on the 1st bus ride, sit next to someone you like because that is ur permanent seat
16. talk to people back at home often so u don't get homesick
17. do ur work
18. Have fun!! it will be over before you know it

I've left advice in before in this section and others, so i'll just give my main piece of advice here...

Enjoy it while you're there. Make sure to be friendly, and get names and numbers from friends, other people in your group and from your FA. Balance your picture taking with being in the moment. You will regret it if you come home without pictures of your friends, group and places you went, but don't let that rule your trip. Look around, talk to people, enjoy the amazing sites, sounds and people. I will never forget my experience. I loved it!

For all of your bathroom supplies, get a small tote. If you want to keep track of your stuff, it really helps. Smile Where I found it the most useful was at the sleepover when you had to get ready in the bathroom. Wink Also, make sure to double bag your shampoo and conditioner because last year, I only put it in one bag on I guess when I was on the plane, it opened and got on all of my clothes! Ohmygosh I was confused Confused until my roomates helped me out. (Dont be afraid to ask your roomates for help! They really care about you!)The gift shop sells very little bottles and they were like $5 dollars. Hyper Lucky for me, my roomates let me use there hair products. Also, save your self $5 to $10 dollars by doing that! The laundry room is there, but you can't use it unless and adult is with you.You will be happy! Cool

Wow, it's been a really long time since I've been on here. ^_^

I suggest making a checklist before you go of everything you're going to bring. Make two checkboxes next to each item—one for when you pack, and one for when you leave, just to make sure you have everything. Also, I wish I had taken more pictures. I only had the group photo of my LFG...I had to ask my friend to email me her pictures.

Most of all, have fun and be thankful you're there! Seriously, the time passes by so quickly. At the end of the Conference, you'll be like, "Did I really do all that?"

Ah, reading this thread brings back the best of memories(:
I went two and a half years ago (that long already?) and here's some advice. Times have changed, and so has the conference, a bit. But here are some staple things that will make the conference more enjoyable:

Pay no attention to age barriers. What I mean by this is make friends from all age groups! I had people at my conference from fourth grade to eighth grade. I was going into sixth grade at the time and my three best friends from my LFG were going into seventh grade, and one was going into eighth.

Don't put your room key next to your phone! I stayed at the Hilton at the Washington Dulles Airport (<3) so we all had room keys. Putting your room key next to your phone = demagnitation = you have to get a new room key. They don't mind once or twice, but after the third time, they threatened to make my friend pay for the fourth one.

If you're a shy person, come out of your shell a bit and if your a very energetic person, use it to your advantage! Make friends on the first or second day. It might seem nerve wracking, but just sit down with some people. They're just as nervous as you are(: What I did was, I talked to a group of people online for months and months before the conference and so we all knew eachother pretty well, or so we thought. We all wrote our screen names on our nametags and found eachother at the conference, and it was a sigh of relief for all of us, "knowing" someone there.

Don't be afraid to make an idiot out of yourself. I know that was poorly worded, but what I'm getting at is have fun! When you go to Hard Rock Cafe (if they still do that...) DANCE! Don't be a wall flower, dance! My group started a conga line!

...I could go on forever, but I think y'all would get bored(: Just make the best of the conference because you'll want to remeber it forever.

~*~*~*~*Sophia~*~*~*~*
Let us die young,
Or let us live forever.
We don't have the power,
But we never say never.
Sitting in a sandpit,
Life is a short trip.
The music's for the sad man.

I am excited about going. I just wish they had a discussion for the dates that I am attending which is April 17-22. I would like to talk to anyone that is going then. Maybe even make a friend before I get there.

They do...just you're the only one who's posted in that week. If some posts there, you can talk and make friends. Cross your fingers. Wink

Bring a book, music or homework. Try to keep yourself busy if you are nervous that way you aren't thinking about the flight too much.

Where do we put our baggage when we're on the plane? Those compartments above us right?
Then when we arrive at BWI all we have to do is take our baggage out, or is there something different?
