Hey Attendees!
If you have ANY questions about the conference feel free to ask them here and our skilled alums will be sure to answer you. Most of the time it might be me, just a warning :]. I'm Taylor by the way, and I attended NYLSC back in 2006 in California.
First regarding cell phones, ipods, laptops, etc. For me the only one out of these items that is a MUST is a cell phone. However, it must be turned off during all meetings. You are free to use it during meals and at night. When I went I brought my iPod, but I only used it at night to kind of fall asleep. Any item you may bring for entertainment such as a laptop, psp, etc I would discourage bringing for the simple fact that you will hardly, if ever use it.
Second is clothing. When I went the first day was a white shirt and slacks. I believe this still stands. As for clothing for the other days it is casual. WEAR COMFY CLOTHING. Do not get caught up in it being a fashion show because it really is not. Wear clothes you are comfortable in. I would recommend jeans, t-shirts, etc.
Third is what you do at NYLSC. NYLSC is probably the most leadership oriented conference CYLC offers. You spend most of your time working on honing your specific leadership skills. Unlike JrNYLC you don't travel much, if at all, and most of your time is spent within your group.
Fourth is student lead seminars. The student lead seminars are eaily one of the most exciting experiences at NYLSC. Your FA will ask if any of you wish to lead a seminar, and if your idea coincides with another scholar's idea you will sit down and decide how to lead the seminar together. Seminar's at my conference included: Controversial issues, Music, and Religion.
Fifth is of course the talent show. I recommend EVERYONE to audition for the talent show. I was in my talent show at my conference and it was so much fun. You'll find that this environment is a GREAT way to express yourself. Whether it's singing, dancing, or reading a bit from a play you will have SO MUCH FUN.
The Ceremony is held on the last morning of the conference. On the first day of your conference you will be separated into 3 groups: Student Lead Seminar Committee, Talent Show Committee, and Commencement Ceremony Committee. Throughout the conference you will go to your chocie of these three groups and work on setting up and running one of these three events. I personally worked on Commencement, and I had a blast. These committees give you more time to meet different people from different groups as well as apply your new leadership skills in a more diverse environment.
Any more questions feel free to ask here :]
