Okay hi , The deadline has already passed for the travel information...when do we get to see our tentative schedules? And will they tell us what type of clothes we wear on what days? Cuz I need to know how many suit stes I'll need. Also, how dressy is the final dinner/dance?

Its been 3 years since I went to GYLC and I never recieved the Travel package up to this day I downloaded the Tentative schedule and the GYLC guide from the website. As each session comes closer they will post the sample schedule. The Farewell Cruise you can dress in a simple dress once it is appropriate and not to revealing. Search facebook for GYLC groups you may see pictures of the farewell Cruise I will see if I can post some of my pictures for you to see.

Thanks! And one more thing, how up-to-date do we really need to be with current events/world news? because I really don't watch much news. Can I get away without not knowing much at the conference? Or will I look ignorant?

Hi Lauren,
You can get away without knowing anything. But you will feel intimidated by the people around you, but as I mentioned in previous post you don't have to read all the political books and material. Just follow the current events and try to follow the G20 Summit, Summit of the Americas, United Nation and World Situations ( War in Iraq and Afgan...) just enough to be able to participate in the simulations so you wouldn't feel left out.

Firstly, even though your name is 'trini' vishal you could not have been living in Trinidad when you were invited... could you? I never heard about that school...
Anyways, thank you for answering my questions. However, I attend Fatima College and i'm in lower 6
However, apparently last year, a student from our school who left went GYLC a while back... So he had the oppurtunity to reccomend some students (i think it was 10) to go GYLC... I don't know what gave him the right but that's what happened. He asked the form 6 dean who selected 8 lower sixes at the time. Luck me! I had a brother who excels (almost as well as myself -lol) and when miss wrote down his name guess whose name was also recommended? Yes MINE!
So around november last yr we got a letter about something called GYLC (lol- now it's like how couldn't i not know about it) but we ignored it assuming it ws some scam. And even if it were real it was too much money. Then like two weeks later a narcissistic child in my class came bragging how he was selected to go to a Global conference. Then he asked if anyone knew 'Ronald Nelson.' because he was the name that recommended him. It was then that it stuck me! GYLC! oh! so we went and asked the dean who said she was the one that recommended us. We then started fundaraising. But due to the Global ecconomic crisis alot of companies do NOT want to sponsor so my mom had to fork out the 50, 000 TT (for anyone wondering what is this- It is Trinidad's currency and is a bout 6 TT to i USdollar) dollars for my bro and myself to go.
Now we are contining to fundariaise but the most I see we're getting is like 10, 000 TT dolars back... *sigh*
I love my mom!
So that's how i got to go...
In the event that u were in Trinidad when u went how did YOU go?

Hi Nehemiah,
Well to clear it all up. As my screen name states I am "Trini" Vishal born and breed in sweet T&T. I attended Waterloo High School located in Central Trinidad between Chaguanas and Couva, currently I am President of the school's Alumni. You must have heard about my school We won 4 National scholarships last year and also won RBTT Young Leaders last year also.
I was living in Trinidad when I got invited(I have lived my entire life in Trinidad by the way). I was selected among 15 other diligent students by the Ministry of Education to attend the conference all expenses paid. From what I understand, that was the last year they sponsored students.
Petrotrin sponsored some last year also UTC and Atlantic LNG co sponsored some. I considered myself lucky otherwise I would not have even heard about the conference farless afford it on my own.

4) What is done as far as laundry?
5) Do you have any other suggestions as to what to carry that will be necessary?
6) And could you give me a run-down of what happens on the day you arrive?
Thanks again... Arianne
Hi Arianne,
To answer your questions.
1) Yes there are some optional sessions/site visits but more so site visits.
2)A iron is available at the Hotel in DC but not at Manhattan College so I am not sure if you will be able to do without it at Manhattan
3)Yes there are times you will be able to dress casual in Jeans and Sneakers.
4)There are Laundry facilities at Manhattan not at Sheraton so you can use the coin laundry at Manhattan to wash your dirty clothes.
5) Well a general tip is to walk with 2 towels for use at Manhattan you will have towels available at the Hotel however none at the college.
6)On arrival day you will be assigned to your country when you register all luggage will be put into a room untill you are given room keys. You will be given room keys and will hve to attend a few orientation sessions. Then you will be allowed to go to your room tom meet your roommates and freshen up a bit and then you will have your first Leadership Group Meetings (LGM's). Then you will have dinner and a social mixer, and retire for the night. I think thats the order but I will verify and make changes if necessary.

I know that you can't get back your money after a certain period of time I am not sure about the deadline dates. My advice is to send a email or call CYLC use the contact us page on www.cylc.org

Hi sorry I thought of some more questions! 1) How much free time do you have if any? Because I am kind of a running freak, and I don't know if I will have time to use a treadmill at the hotel or if I shoudl just live 2 weeks without it. I think may be I will just skip running, but I am just curious. 2)I am doing the add-on days and how many people are their about? 3) How is the food? 4) How much extra money should I bring? Should I bring it in cash or..? I love to shop, and already started saving but just a general idea, with lunch food and I don't know what else. 5) How many people are in the LGM'S? 6) Should I bring a type of bag/ backpack with me at all times? 7) Is there ever time to just stop and take a quick picture of something?

Hey Amanda, Thats what im here for, just hit me with all the questions and i'll try my best to answer them.
1) Not much time your days are pretty book But all the walking you will have to do will make up for the running you wouldn't have time 4. 2) Not sure what you mean by add-on days but if it means you will be flyig in a few days early then it all depends on where you staying. 3) I was really food sick in DC beacuse of the cultural difference, but thr food in NY was better 4) The amount of cash you bring depends on the amount off shopping you plan on doing. $400 US is enough for food emmergencies and snacks. Add to that based on the amount off shopping you want to do I suggest bring it in the form of Travellers Cheques and have about $200 in cash available to use untill you can change the Travellers cheques. You wouldn't have problems changing/using them since almost everywhere uses Travellers cheques. 5) LGMs are dependent on the size of your country grouping it could be between 25 to 30 people. 6) A small stylish bag will be handy to carry your stuff arround (Camera, handbook etc.). 7) Yes you will have time to take pictures make sure you have enough battries and a large memory card to store lots of pictures beacuse in the future you will treasure them dearly.
cheers Vishal
